Film, Introduction, and Monologue
Before anything started and to get the juices going we all sat down to watch Battlestar Galactica Review in 4 minutes YouTube video. I myself had not seen the video so it was really cool. After it showed… the entire group of 35 people clapped in arousing applause.
Next Laura had us go around the room counter-clockwise and introduce ourselves with three pieces of vital information:
- Name
- Favorite Episode
- Favorite Character
I don’t remember everyone, but I do remember not one person said Gaeta or Helo as a favorite character. I myself introduced myself and as a representative of the Battlestar Wiki. I got a huge round of applause from the crowd. (More to come on this later.) I also gave my favorite episode as Final Cut, though on my Battlestar Wiki page, I have many.. Final Cut stands out as a favorite because of the style in which it was shot.
Favorite characters has been almost impossible for me, but that’s why you can add an “s” to the end of favorite and it will be “favorites”: Six, Racetrack, and Three. I was the third to last to give an introduction.
The first event of the evening of Monolouges. Where volunteers form the audience would get up and read a scene while the real scene from the show was presented behind us.
Episodes that were done came from (no order here):
I participated in the monologue for Kobol’s Last Gleaming playing the part of Roslin on Colonial One :
Colonial one
Roslin: All right, currency. While bartering will continue for the foreseeable future, we do have a system in place now to take the economy back to a currency-based standard.
Head 6: Do you love her?
Baltar: Did you, um…
Roslin: Dr. Baltar… if something should happen to me, it is vital that you comprehend and are familiar with the political structures that are just beginning to fall into place here. Do you understand this?
Head 6: Answer me!
Baltar: Yes, of course, I understand. My answer is no. No, I don’t think that I can handle this right now the– the intricacies of the bureaucracy, I can’t get my head around, uh, this, which, with all due respect, Madam President you have spent your entire political career uh, learning to understand. More to the point, how you could think that my head could be turned so quickly by– by a new thing is, uh, it just– it astounds me. How did you– how did you seriously think that I was gonna be able to cope with this kind of responsibility?
Head 6: I don’t believe you.
Roslin: You’re a genius, are you not?
Baltar: Well, quite frankly, I don’t give a flying frak whether you believe me or not, all right? Because I’ve had it, I am… I’m tired of being pushed and prodded around like I’m some kind of toy. I’m not your plaything!
Head 6 and Roslin: Plaything?
Baltar: I don’t work for you and uh, quite frankly, I don’t have to sit any more and take this kind of abuse from either of you! You either– either in here, either in there, wherever it is, I don’t need to take it.
Head 6: I love you, Gaius.
Baltar: Oh, do me a favor…
Roslin: I think perhaps, you need a break from this.
Baltar: You’re right. We need a break.
I could not do a females voice, but I did the best I could. I was originally going to be doing the voices of 4 random characters from Six Degrees of Separation, but the video feed that we had was problematic. The scene was later done before the panel.
Cylon Arm Wrestling, Quotes, and Trivia
For all the little events, this one was weird. Two people had to volunteer for this too work and people were still a bit shy about participating. Oh well. Two people would be “cylons” and they had to throw insults at the other trying to win. One unlucky couple that joined us a bit late came in and was chosen to be part of the wrestling out of the blue.
A version of “What’s my line?” was played using quotes John gathered from the Battlestar Wiki. John, Laura, and Sabrina (Update 9/2/09: Thanks Bailey!)read quotes in different voices. Even going as far of Star Wars character voices. It was funny having everyone guess! That ended pretty quickly and we went right into Trivia.
Trivia was pretty fun because not only were the two people going “head” to “head” but the audience could rack up points if the panel members didn’t know it. This was tough for some people. My bonus question never came to be though. Oh well.

Hey Shane, great blog recap of the night. It was a great time, you and the rest of the panel were very enlightening and engaging especially for a crowd that seemed very happy to get back into talking Battlestar Galactica. The withdrawal is very very difficult! I didn’t get a chance to thank the entire panel, so just wanted to thank you for the time you and Justin, John and Ajay gave to all of us. Looking forward to the Nerd nite in Manhattan. (although when looking that up I only saw a listing for NYC being in Brooklyn on Sept. 18th, since I can’t find any disambiguation for Manhattan nerd nite I hope you will keep us posted.)
Also, the girl that did the “Frak, what’s my Line” with John and Laura Lee was named Sabrina (I believe) I remember all the people who liked Unfinished Business!!
Bailey aka IrishEDP on twitter & the Battlestar Wiki forum.
PS for all the BSG lovers out there who missed this event, it was really a great, fun time and I hope you can make the next one. there can NEVER be too much Battlestar!
