Election Inspector

Posted by Shane

I completed my stint this General Election year as an Official Election Inspector for my Election District for the Town of Brookhaven inside the County of Suffolk this past Nov. 3rd.

The election is a long process. 5:30am arrival for polls to be opened by 6:00am and the polls close at 9:00pm, but you don’t finish counting the machines, tallying the results, and sending the information to the Board of Elections till about 10:45pm. It was a very long day one that I started with with only 3 hours of sleep the night before. It got very boring at the time because there would be times when no one would show up at all.

Being a political junkie it was very cool to see the whole process work.

Some facts about the entire process as an Inspector:

  1. Only myself and one other person in my Election District were under the age of 30.
  2. I would only say about less than 1% of the people voting in my Election District were under the age of 30.
  3. Process does allow anyone to vote as long as you met the eligibility requirements.

I had great fun and learned a lot and will do it next election season!
