Oscar 2009 Predictions

Posted by Shane

Wow. I like totally forgot about posting my Oscar predictions. I usually do this once they are announced, but I have some free time this morning before we leave for the slopes. The Oscars happen on Sunday this year hosted by Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.

Let get to it! Categories marked with a * mean that in that category I never saw the movie so it’s usually based on speculation vs. seeing the movie-

  • Best Actor* – Jeff Bridges in “Crazy Heart” — $
  • Best Actor in a Supporting Role – Christoph Waltz in “Inglourious Basterds” — $
  • Best Actress – Sandra Bullock in “The Blind Side” — $
  • Best Actress in a Supporting Role* – ??? – I have no idea!
  • Best Animated Feature Film* – “Up” (Pixar) — $
  • Art Direction – Toss up between “Avatar” and “Nine” — $ and % (Avatar Won)
    • Seen ‘Avatar’, ‘Sherlock Holmes’
  • Cinematography – “Avatar” — $
  • Costume Design* – “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” — %
  • Directing – “Avatar” — %
  • Best Documentary *- ??? – I have no idea!
  • Best Short Documentary* – ??? – I have no idea!
  • Film Editing – “District 9” — %
  • Foreign Film* – ??? – I have no idea!
  • Makeup – “Star Trek” — $
  • Music (Original Score) – “Avatar” — %
  • Music (Original Song) – ??? – I have no idea!
  • Motion Picture of the Year – “Avatar” — % (Major Fail)
    • Seen ‘Avatar’, ‘The Blind Side’, ‘District 9’, ‘Inglourious Basterds’
  • Animated Short Film – ??? – I have no idea!
  • Live Short Film – ??? – I have no idea!
  • Sound Editing – “Star Trek” — %
    • Seen ‘Avatar’, ‘Star Trek’, ‘Inglourious Basterds’
  • Sound Mixing – “Avatar” — %
    • Seen ‘Avatar’, ‘Star Trek’, ‘Inglourious Basterds’, ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’
  • Visual Effects – “Avatar” — $
  • Adapted Screenplay – “District 9” — %
  • Original Screenplay – ??? – I have no idea!

A lot of these movies this year I never got around to watching, but that’s because of work. With 10 nominations for Best Picture it’s really hard to nail down the best picture, but a safe bet is Avatar. In sound editing and mixing Star Trek and Avatar should both be winning awards. This movies I play in my head all the time and the sounds are so distinctive that’s it’s really hard. I guess why the Oscars are ‘The Top Award’.

After the Oscars I will update this post with another symbol that indicates that I got it right or wrong. You can view the complete list here. Thanks for tuning in!

UPDATE 3/8/9 at 1am: After watching the Oscars (more about this later btw…) I was a bit off this year because of the limited number of movies I watched. So now that some movies won (i.e. Hurt Locker) I gotta watch it for sure. Anything marked with a “$” is Right and “%” is Wrong.
