jQuery > Prototype

Posted by Shane

So today I was doing some surfing online and I noticed someone was talking about jQuery. I was always interested in what jQuery was so I watched the video screencast of them using it first. jQuery is..

…a lightweight JavaScript library that emphasizes interaction between JavaScript and HTML.

After watching the screen cast, I was amazed on how little code was used versus what Prototype would use to do the same thing.

That lead me to the fact that I could use jQuery instead of a massive lines of code I was using to format the module lists (the sidebar boxs) to the right with by adding the “first” and “last” class to the first and last list (LI) elements.

So after a little reading on the jQuery tutorial site I took the plunge. After a few failed attempts I got it working perfectly. It transformed from 40 lines of code using the prototype way to now just 6 lines of code. *shock* (Click here to view the JavaScript file here on the web.)

Just so your clear on the title of this blog, JQuery is far more superier than prototype. With promots me to wonder why one of the plugins I am running is using prototype when jQuery is much better. I might add more jQuery to do more fancy stuff as jQuery has a solid user base.

Spy Awards

Posted by Shane

On a related note to Team Fortress 2 gaming, I checked out my stats today on the server I play on, and I noticed I had gotten every spy award for the day (August 2, 2008) plus points captured. Below is a screen shot of the same link above.

I play a game called Dangerous Waters, which is a naval simulation game. You can command a Perry-class frigate, Seawolf-class submarine, or a Russian Akula class submarine. The main object of the game (if you are playing another person) is to hunt them down before they do the same to you.

There is one problem with the game. One of them details with the number of people that play the game. There are not many — even with the game being released on Steam. Another problem with the game is that it hasn’t been updated or even touched by theĀ  makers of the game for years and for now it doesn’t even look like there might be any new versions out there.

I bring this up because there is a huge potential to make a new version of this game in a Massive Multiplayer Online (MMO) game and nothing is being down about it. Wouldn’t this be cool to be in a “sub” or a “ship” and sail around the globe with friends looking for enemy patrols. I been thinking about creating such a game, but I have yet to find a engine that could support under-water rendering. I have tons of ideas on how to do such a game and it be really neat to find people who share my ideas with and write the game together.

Team Fortress 2

One of the games I been playing a lot of is a game by Valve called Team Fortress 2 (Check out their blog here.) This game is one of the most well thought out games and updated game out there. Since Valve uses their Steam software to keep the game up-to-date it also allows them to update the game play itself to everyone who plays it keeping the game fresh.

As most of you know, I am heavily involved with the Battlestar Wiki Project (which is part of FrakMedia! Productions) and we done a lot of work on the English wiki were we detailed almost every aspect of every detail of all the shows, events, characters, etc. in the wiki. The only new information I am seeing recently is from current episodes.

In any case, we link to episode pages a lot to satisfy a number of “mandated” conventions: cite, cross-referencing, etc. Usually inside a template we have to code it the long way out if there was multiple times that we had to refer to different episodes.

| sometemplatevar = [[33]]<br/>[[The Hand of God (RDM)|The Hand of God]]

Always a very unpleasant thing to do. So we were working on a new sub-wiki called “Battlestar Props” which is going to be a central repository on the props used in the show. One of people I work with suggested that we able to input into a template the production numbers of the episode(s) (eg. 101, 110) to render the links for us. I thought that was a great idea. So… the Episode parser was born!

avast! virus protection

Posted by Shane

I am often called upon my friends one computer help (or family members in distress), when computer problems arise. The 911 of the computer world. The question I get asked the most during normal problem solving procedures is “What anti-virus program are you current using?” and that I answer pretty easily.

Currently that is avast! professional version 4.8 (detail featured list) software. After being a fan of Trend Mico systems for a long time, I found out that it was a huge memory hog once your machine had lots of files and wasn’t always able to detect the malicious code when surfing on the web.

Left 4 Dead: Preview

Posted by Shane

One of the games I am most anticipated to play is Left 4 Dead.

Left 4 Dead Gameplay

Left 4 Dead Gameplay

A quick description of Left 4 Dead from Wikipedia:

Left 4 Dead is played in first person perspective, with full visualization of the player character’s body. Up to four players take control of the four main characters of the game, “The Survivors”, who play through the levels fighting off the Infected, which are humans who have been infected with a mutated form of rabies.

I have been following any news I can get on this game as I really want to beta test this game. *hint* *hint* The game comes out in Nov. 2008. I plan on getting in deep with this game as I already been working on a map idea that takes us through our Nation’s Capitol as the survivors have to rescue a number of VIPs in the remaining area that have yet to be evacuated by the Marines. It’s still in the early planing stages and I can only do so much on paper. Once the SDK is released, I plan on taking my ideas from paper to reality.

Check out the official website and the major primary fan site that has everything to do with the game.
